I have just downloaded the non-jumping section(looks good)- but have found that the movie for the monkey gybe locks up and all I get is a black screen. I don't know if this is a one off or whether any other movies do the same.

Can you please check what version your iOS is?
And please check if you have the latest version of the app... (it says the version at the launchscreen right under the TRICKTIONARY headline...

iOS is 4.3.3(8J2)and Trictionary App is v1.2.0.284.
